NRI

The Town of Shandaken has begun a project to develop a Natural Resources Inventory. The Natural Resources Inventory will describe and map the many unique natural resources found within the Town.

What is a Natural Resources Inventory?

A Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) is, as the name implies, an inventory or catalogue of a community’s natural resources. Cultural resources such as historic, scenic and recreational assets can also be included. An NRI is made up of a series of maps with accompanying narrative explanations. The maps and text highlight a community’s natural features such as water resources, soils, forests, important habitats and more.

Why develop an NRI?

An NRI is an important tool for local decision-makers as they develop plans and policies that protect critical natural resources and take local priorities such as habitat connectivity, climate resilience and scenic views into account. An NRI does not regulate land use, but it does provide important information that allows the Town government and local residents to make sound, informed decisions about land use topics.

Who is leading the NRI project?

The project to develop an NRI for the Town of Shandaken is coordinated by a Steering Committee:

  • Catherine Del Tufo, Town of Shandaken Conservation Advisory Council
  • Robert Drake, Town of Shandaken Deputy Supervisor
  • Max Kelly, Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension
  • Juan Rosales, Town of Shandaken Planning Board
  • Bethia Waterman, Town of Shandaken Conservation Advisory Council
  • Advisory: Penny Adler-Colvin, Hudson River Estuary Program, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

The NRI project is supported by a consultant team that includes Shadbush Consulting, LLC and Hudsonia, Ltd.

How is the NRI project funded?

The Town of Shandaken’s NRI project is supported by a grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund through the Hudson River Estuary Program of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Can the public participate in the NRI project?

Yes! There will be various opportunities for public participation throughout the development of the NRI. The first opportunities for public input will be in spring 2026 – stay tuned for additional details.

When will the NRI be completed?

The NRI is expected to be completed in early 2027.
